One of Canada’s oldest independent cultural institutions, NSCAD University continues to be regarded as a principal centre for education and research in visual culture in North America. Part of our appeal is the ever-present relationship of the old to the new, and our convenient location in the heart of downtown Halifax, a vibrant and alluring city. ,d5I.]9X\)w Uh

s3Z_.zCw NSCAD has 3 campuses nestled in the historic Halifax downtown district. The Granville campus offers programming, library, print shop, supply store and the Anna Leonowens Gallery. A short walk away is the Alliance Atlantis Academy Building, which houses the university’s film program, and the new Port Campus on the Halifax waterfront, which opened in the fall of 2007. This new campus is an impressive 70,000 square foot facility that features 18 foot ceilings and generous natural lighting. This third campus is home to sculpture studios, wood shop, metal shop foundry, product design and ceramics. All NSCAD studio facilities are open 24 hours a day, seven days a week allowing students to study and create on their own schedule.

d p'O"pj(Ik{e Foundation is the first-year program for all students entering NSCAD without prior university credit or without prior fine art study. A prerequisite to further study, these two semesters are designed to lay the groundwork for a wide variety of artistic practices, principles, approaches and issues. While developing a broad base of experience in the visual arts, students explore the range of possibilities available in a professional artistic career. Foundation courses introduce the fundamentals for further study in art, craft, design and historical and critical studies: the visual vocabulary, tools and materials, practical skills and techniques, and critical thinking. After the foundation year, students are well equipped to decide where to focus the rest of their studies.

+PQt$Oy3X*y hZ On-campus: NSCAD’s location in Halifax’s downtown core means we do not maintain a campus residence; however the university has an agreement with nearby Dalhousie University and University of King’s College to provide a limited number of residence placements to NSCAD students. Dalhousie housing services include meal plans and a number of different types of accommodation.

c$C.D Mv-rN _(D NSCAD University has a long history of international engagement. Faculty and visitors come from all over the world to teach, lecture and exhibit. Approximately seven percent of students are international and there is an active exchange and off campus independent study program. The Off Campus Study Program enables students to pursue study away from the university under three circumstances. Independent Off Campus Study allows students to devise individual plans of study within Canada or abroad while registered for courses listed in the university calendar. Exchange Study allows students to continue study at one of a number of institutions around the world with which we participate in an exchange agreement. Currently, students have access to exchange study with more than 70 institutions in 15 countries around the world. International students may work on and off campus while studying at NSCAD but will require a study and a work permit to do so. Graduates may stay in Canada and work for up to two years after graduation. International students have a voice at NSCAD in the classroom and beyond through membership in the Student Union and through the International Student Group. All international students benefit from access to student services including health insurance.H3hz:]Y
