9 d1 k; U; M n6 q" S, d8 EThe Imperial Oil Seminar in Computer Science for Young Women is a unique opportunity for selected female students from across Canada. The seminar's purpose is to spark interest in computer science amoung young high school girls, so that they might consider taking computer science courses at the high school level. We also want to show young women the benefits of a post-secondary computer science education. 9 j3 H% G' b- }; _
2 m9 t& X0 w! M% ]: i/ cEach year applications for the two Imperial Oil Seminars are made available online in January. The Seminars occur during two separate weeks during the months of May and June. : e( ]$ M2 v. a" P) g9 F! W

Each seminar takes place over the course of a week and features lectures, labs, and hands-on activites in Computer Science. The young women invited have many opportunities to explore a wide range of computer science applications and interact with faculty, graduate students and undergraduate students. Topic areas showcased include graphics, bioinformatics, finite state machines, user interfaces, hardware architecure and algorithm design. 9 G3 U: P& Z# w5 t7 m

The young women invited to the seminar stay on campus in a residence and have a chance to experience the independence of university life. They are chaperoned by a number of female undergraduate students who can tell them all about life on campus. There is also ample time for social events, as the young women invited have an opportunity to meet others from across the country with similar intellectual interests. In previous years, the young women have had the chance to go rock climbing, swim and play basketball, sing karaoke and see a play at the Stratford Festival. We are hoping that friendships developed at the seminar will continue through the university lives of these young women. The seminar ends with a banquet attended by the young women, their families, the seminar organizers, and faculty presentors. Overall, the seminar is a tremendously stimulating time for all persons associated with it. The Imperial Oil Seminar is growing! 9 Q6 D2 H3 j- u& ^$ E$ M/ d

Eligibility: " o. Q* \) s4 h9 x) d
# f5 X& q! R8 B: k- Eligible candidates must be female in grade 9 or 10 attending a Canadian high school
- Young women must apply to the seminar, applications are sent to high schools in January or February of each year
- Young women are selected for the seminar based on a number of factors, including geographic diversity
- We receive over 900 fantastic applications each year, so if you apply and are not accepted, you should not feel badly about it - we'd like to accept everyone but we can't...
