An intense low pressure system will approach the Maritimes on Friday. Snow at times heavy changing through ice pellets or freezing rain to rain is expected to begin in western regions late Friday morning. It will then spread to Cape Breton by late in the evening. Snowfall accumulations of 15 to 20 centimetres are forecast for most areas before the snow changes through ice pellets to periods of rain. Rainfall amounts could reach 10 millimetres over southwestern regions with lesser amounts elsewhere. Strong easterly winds will develop ahead of this system with wind gusts up to 110 km/h over the Cape Breton Highlands overnight on Friday and into Saturday morning. Blowing snow is also expected with this system
