First-year student programs
9 d3 j$ ?5 ^$ g4 YElmitek (a transition program for Aboriginal students), MathCAD (acomputerized tutorial for mathematics students), first week orientation(including activities and campus tours), Science and Technology Bridge(an innovative first-year curriculum designed to addressnon-traditional students’ needs in the areas of mathematics and coresciences). Academic advising and free peer tutoring offered to allstudents. The University Prep Course (UP) is a course designed forfirst-year students. It is designed and run by senior Cape BretonUniversity students. The seven-week course will help new students brushup on study skills, manage time, and offer support as new studentsbecome adjusted to university college life. Students who complete thecourse will receive an 80 per cent rebate (course costs around $250).

; {% H5 t! g  VOn-campus:The university  provides accommodation to approximately 460 students.Housing includes a traditional-style residence with furnished singleand double rooms as well as a furnished apartment-style complexcomprised of four-bedroom units and two bathrooms per apartment. Thenewest residence features a combination of dorm-style rooms andapartment units. Approximately 50 percent of spaces are reserved forfirst-time students. Spaces are allocated on a first-come, first-servedbasis. Annual costs: traditional-style room, $3,000 - $4,000; mandatorymeal plan, $2,080 - $2,760; apartment-style room (no meal plan), $4,200although meal plans are available ranging from $1,200 - $1,520 annually.9 @. z) V- ^( u1 S1 K$ D* y
Off-campus:Average prices off campus: room and board, $100/month+; one-bedroomapartment, $400/month; two-bedroom apartment, $450/month+;three-bedroom house, $700/month+. Cape Breton Transit runs bus serviceto/from campus and surrounding communities. # o# Q. z% [0 \" O  R

Information technology
$ A  r6 V" V( A# w3 VStudentshave access to six general purpose computer labs equipped with IntelPentium 4 based microcomputers and laser printing (fee for laserprinting). In addition to these labs, there are specialized computerinstructional labs for nursing, CAD/CAM, engineering, petroleum, andlibrary services. Staff at the Computer Centre Helpdesk are availableto assist students. ) T3 j7 q) J1 @# G3 q5 _1 T

9 D+ |% @/ j# d2 S* {; CEach computer has softwareto provide word processing, spreadsheet processing, databasedevelopment, statistical analysis, web browsing, e-mail services, and ahost of language compliers and course specific software. All labcomputers are connected to the university’s network/Internet and sitbehind an Internet firewall/IPS device. To authenticate access to theuniversity’s network facilities a user Login ID and password arecreated for each student upon registration.

) U2 S. H. }! u9 YResidencestudents have Internet access connections in their rooms. Access to theInternet is provided through a firewall/IPS device and provides for webbrowsing and web based e-mail services. Off-campus students can accesstheir e-mail account using a web browser through a local Internetservice provider.

Undergraduate:A total of more than $710,000 is available for entrance, in-course andgraduation scholarships and awards. Also available is $30,000 inemergency bursaries line and $90,000 for athletics.

CBUbelieves in supporting the financial needs of its students. Over 700in-course bursaries and scholarships offered by the university inaddition to prestigious awards ranging from $2,500 to $24,000 for highschool graduates. In addition to established scholarships, there arethree new levels of major scholarships now available to students: TheChancellor’s Scholarships valued at $24,000 ($6,000 per year)resident’s Scholarships valued at $20,000 ($5,000 per year), MarquisScholarships valued at $12,000 ($3,000 per year) and, Deans'Scholarships valued at $10,000 ($2,500 per year). CapeBreton University works through the National Student Exchange whichlinks more than 170 colleges and universities across Canada and theUnited States. It also gives students access to many of theinternational programs of member institutions.
