Crackdown in Tibet
( e/ R7 \' E1 @0 z' k4 H) yChinese troops are pouring into Lhasa, the Tibetan capital, and an ultimatum for instigators of last week's riots to surrender to Chinese authorities has been issued. Meanwhile, protests against Chinese rule in Tibet have spread to other provinces bordering the Himalayan region.( e5 m) _+ B% K. {  h! U

OI find it distressing that Canada, like Europe, is coming out and ruling out a boycott before we even see just how brutally far China might go to stamp out protest in the Olympic lead-up. Are we betting that they won't go much further than they already have? Seems like an unsafe wager to me.

An Olympic boycott will only serve to build a bigger wall between China and the democratic world. We can't afford that, given its role as the planet's new economic powerhouse. We need China's cooperation at the international table, especially in grappling with global environmental challenges. The best way to help its rulers develop an appreciation and respect for other cultures is to make sure the Olympics proceed! The Games will do more to move things forward for human rights and diversity in China than any boycott could ever accomplish.

$ L% S. o" A1 v# s) [  mAlthough I am no fan of the Olympic committee, I fail to see what a boycott would accomplish. I think the threat of action is positive in that the whole world needs to be educated on how both the Tibetan and Chinese people perceive human rights, culture and territory. are they really "peaceful" protesters?' U) Z( U& c' ]
I really doubt that.. Did u see any "peaceful" protesters burned cars and killed innocent people on the street? 13 people got killed by these madmans, more than 300 building had been burned... One of my friends, he has local business in Lhasa, and his store had been destoryed too.The lucky thing is that he is not injured. By the way, he is a Tibetan...

% P# U% O% K$ |5 a  [Yes, the Olympics in Beijing should be boycotted, the Chinese government is the worst of the worst.. I find it appalling that we pick and choose the evils of the world based on what they do for us. The USA launched a illegal war in Iraq under the guise of removing the dictatorship and installing democracy and they do so by borrowing 70 trillion greenbacks from china, strengthening the already powerful, Anti-democratic military government there, all because North America, with its fiat money, would fall to pieces without the second largest exporter in the world.. the only thing that matters to the powers that be is economy, human rights is a very distant agenda, and china is a human rights nightmare.
